1999年、阿部千登勢(Chitose Abe)が「sacai(サカイ)」を設立。ブランドコンセプトは「日常の上に成り立つデザイン」。スタンダードなものを大切にしながら、エレガントな要素を加え、またクラシックなアイテムにひねりを加えることで、sacaiの考えるエレガントな「ニュースタンダード」を表現。異質な素材の組み合わせ、独特なシルエット、細かい部分に技術、アイデア、工夫を凝らしたデザインなど、よく見ると確かに分かる拘りが強く支持されている。特に、異素材のミックス、タック、プリーツ使いで前後の印象を変えるデザインをsacaiは得意としており、バックや横からのアングルが美しく見える。ブランドの開始当初はニットを使用したアイテムが多くを占めていた。ニットは現在でもsacaiの特長の1つであるが、よりバリエーションが増えている。適正な価格でクオリティを高く維持。毛玉のできる商品が分かると、すぐに自己負担で回収するなど品質に徹底的なこだわりを持つ。
