    Otsuka Shoe's roots lie in Otsuka Shoten, which was founded in 1872 (Meiji 5) in Shiba-Rotsukicho, Tokyo, by Otsuka Iwajiro, who was just 13 years old when he learned shoemaking techniques. He is said to have devoted himself to studying shoes, such as dismantling British shoes owned by high-ranking officials of the Imperial Household Agency with their permission, and this may have led to the company becoming a purveyor to the Imperial Household Agency in 1882, and making shoes for members of the Imperial family, including Emperor Meiji. In addition, while Japanese-made shoes were producing shoes for the army, Otsuka Shoten was also responsible for manufacturing military boots for the navy. Otsuka Shoe, which has played a major role in the history of Japanese shoes, opened "OTSUKA M-5" in 2002 as a shoe salon focusing on custom-made products (the name M-5 comes from the year of the company's founding, Meiji 5).
